Company History

Green Building Automation (GBA) began humbly in the garage of founder Scott Kaplin’s home in Royal Oak, Michigan. Initially, Scott considered joining an established company, but his passion for innovation and independence drove him to start his own business. While the original name idea was “Building Automation Systems,” the term “green” was a major buzzword in 2008—so we became Green Building Automation.

About a year later, GBA moved into its first office in Detroit, Michigan. After five years, we relocated to Plymouth, and in 2018, we expanded by opening a second office on Michigan’s west side in Comstock Park. Most recently, in 2025, our Plymouth office moved to Westland.

From our early days serving only local Detroit projects, GBA has grown to manage projects across the United States. A major milestone was securing our first commercial client—a big deal for Scott, who came from a company specializing in large-scale buildings.

Over the years, GBA has faced significant challenges, including the 2008 recession, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the complexities of expanding into new markets. Despite these hurdles, we’ve grown to a team of 20–30 employees and continue to look ahead, with plans to open multiple offices nationwide.

One thing has remained constant: our commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction. Every single client we’ve ever worked with has returned for repeat business.
